Scius has been tracking the development of BC's mass timber sector for several years. As of Q2 2022 our database includes over 390 projects completed from 2007 onward or are under construction, representing over 11 million sf of gross floor area completed and a further 6 million square feet in the planning stages.
Projects range from single family homes to high rises. The smallest is a workshop, the largest is the Richmond Olympic Oval. All use large engineered and prefabricated wood members in structural applications for the interior and/or exterior walls, interstitial floors and roof either in “all-wood” designs or as an integral part of a hybrid (with steel, concrete and/or light wood frame) system.
We also keep an eye on all the service providers, consultants, builders, trades, suppliers and technology developers whose collective efforts contribute to growing BC's timber technology ecosystem. It is important to see if and how the industry is developing capacity to work with mass timber. It is also vital that designers and builders have access to relevant digital design and construction tools, equipment and capital is available, and if not, to alert policymakers.
As of March 2021, there are 132 BC companies working in the timber tech sector providing employment to over 1,300 British Columbians and generating over $1 Bn in revenues. In this case "timber tech" includes both mass timber, highly engineered wood products and advanced prefabricated systems that use wood.
